Install Internet Information Services

If IIS is not already installed, you will need to install it.

Open the Windows Components Wizard by going to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components.
Select Application Server and press the Details button.
Select Internet Information Services and press the Details button.
Check World Wide Web Service and press OK.
Press OK to close the Application Server dialog.
Press Next to start the installation process.

Install SQL Server

If you do not have MSDE or SQL Server 2000 or later installed, you will need to install it. We recommend SQL Server 2005 Express in most cases.

Download SQL Server 2005 Express from the official Microsoft SQL Server download page and follow the instructions within the page. You do not need to download the Advanced Services package or the management studio, the lightweight package is all that's required.

Install the package by following the steps in the wizard.

Configure SQL Server to use a static port

Your SQL Server instance may be using dynamic ports. It is essential to change it to use a static port.

Open the SQL Server Configuration Manager by going to Start > All Programs > Microsoft SQL Server 2005 > Configuration Tools > SQL Server Configuration Manager.
Open the SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration node and select Protocols for MSSQLSERVER.
If TCP/IP is not already Enabled, right-click it and select Enable.
Double-click TCP/IP to open the TCP/IP Properties dialog.
Select the IP Addresses tab.
For each listed IP, including IPAll, remove any text from the TCP Dynamic Ports row and change the value of the TCP Port row to 1433.
Press OK to close the TCP/IP Properties.
Select the SQL Server 2005 Services node and select SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER).
Right-click SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) and select Restart.

Windows Vista only: Set yourself as administrator in SQL Server

In Windows Vista, administrators aren't automatically set as database system administrators. This needs to be done manually.

Open the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration application by going to Start > All Programs > Microsoft SQL Server 2005 > Configuration Tools > SQL Server Surface Area Configuration.
Press the Add New Administrator link to open the SQL Server User Provisioning dialog.
Select the permission Member of SQL Server SysAdmin role from the left panel and add it to the right panel by pressing the '>' button.
Press OK.

Create a dedicated user account

The Composica application runs under a specific user account for security and efficiency reasons. You will need to create this account.

Open the Computer Management dialog by going to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management.
Open the Local Users and Groups node and select the Users node.
Right-click the Users node and select New User.
Enter the new user details, uncheck User must change password at next logon, and check Password never expires.
Important: the password must not be blank. Leaving the password blank will prevent you from logging into Composica.
Press Create to create the user.

Note: if the SQL Server is installed on a different computer, you will need to create the user account on the domain. The SQL Server computer must be able to authenticate this user.

Configure PowerPoint

In order to import slides from PowerPoint, you will need to install PowerPoint and configure it to allow this interaction.

Install Microsoft PowerPoint.
Start Microsoft PowerPoint and activate it if required.
Open the Component Services dialog by going to Start > Run > dcomcnfg.
Open the following nodes: Component Services > Computers > My Computer > DCOM Config.
Right-click Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation and select Properties.
Select the Security tab.
Under Launch and Activation Permissions Choose Customize and press Edit.
Press Add, enter the name of the Composica user account, and press OK.
Select the user and check Allow in the Local Launch row and in the Local Activation row.
Press OK and repeat steps 7-9 under the Access Permissions section.
Press OK to close the Properties dialog.
Right-click {000C101C-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} and select Properties.
Repeat steps 6-10.

Install Composica

You will now need to install the Composica application.

Start the Composica Installation Wizard and press Next.
Read and accept the End-User Agreement and press Next.
Choose where the application files should be installed and press Next.
Choose the website from which the application will be launched and press Next.
Enter the name or IP of the SQL Server computer (usually localhost) and press Next.
Enter the name and password of the user account you created and press Next.
Choose where the application Start-menu items should be installed and press Next.
Review your choices and press Install.
Wait for the application to install and configure and press Finish.

Once the installation completes successfully, you will need to activate your Composica instance:

Open Internet Explorer and navigate to http://localhost/composica/ (or http://site/composica/ if you installed it on a different website).
Login using the username administrator and the password composica.
Press the Administration button.
Enter the activation details as they were given to you and press the Activate button.
Login using the same username and password again.
Press the Administration button.
Change the password of the administrator account.
Add developers, reviewers and viewers to the system.
Press the Save button.
