How do I take screenshots in ViewletBuilder4?
Start by selecting the "New Project" button (or, you can select File-New from the menu options. This will open the "Create New Project" wizard. The first step is to select "Screenshot Project" for the "Project Type". Click "Next" and the wizard will guide you through the rest of the process for capturing screenshots for your Viewlet project. For more information on taking screenshots in ViewletBuilder4, visit our ViewletBuilder4 tutorials page.
-
What is the difference between "Full Screen" and "Screen Area" mode?
The second step for creating a new project using the "Screen Project" option is to define your screen capture method; either "Full Screen" or "Screen Area" mode. If you elect to use "Full Screen" mode, when you begin your screenshot session, ViewletBuilder4 will automatically reset your monitor's resolution to the size you define for your slides and will capture everything visible on your screen. When your screenshot session is finished and you exit from the screenshot session by clicking on the ViewletBuilder4 icon in your system tray, ViewletBuilder4 will set your monitor's resolution back to its original settings. If you use "Screen Area" mode, ViewletBuilder4 will not change your monitor's resolution. When beginning your screenshot session in "Screen Area" mode, you will a dynamic box appear on your screen, which you can manually resize and reposition. Once you have this box set to the proper dimensions and location on your screen, just double click inside the box to begin your screenshot session. This will set the screenshot area on your screen, indicating the dimensions and location you've chosen for the screenshot area and only the images inside this box will appear in your screenshots.
-
Using "Full Screen" mode, why do my icons get big when going into screenshot session?
If you use "Full Screen" mode to capture screenshots, ViewletBuilder4 will automatically reset your monitor's resolution to the size you defined for your slides when you begin your screenshot session. So, for example, if you choose a slide size of 640x480, and your monitor's resolution is set to 800x600 before starting the screenshot session, your resolution will automatically be changed to 640x480 for your screenshot session. After you finish your screenshot session by clicking on the ViewletBuilder4 icon in the system tray, your monitor will be set back to its original settings.
-
Why are my desktop icons so big after taking screenshots and how do I fix them?
When you use "Full Screen" mode to capture screenshots, then ViewletBuilder4 will automatically reset your monitor's resolution to match the size you defined for your slides. You MUST exit from the screenshot session by clicking on the ViewletBuilder4 icon in your system tray or ViewletBuilder4 will not be able to reset your monitor back to its original settings. If this problem happens, close ViewletBuilder4. Then, point your mouse over an empty area of your desktop and right click. Select "Properties" from the shortcut menu. In the screen that appears, click on the "Settings" tab. In this tab, you will see an option where you can change your "Screen Area" (or "Desktop Area"). In most cases, you will see it set at "640x480 pixels", so by sliding the bar to change it to "800x600 pixels" or higher, you will be able to change your monitor's resolution back to the setting you need. (Note: This information may vary depending upon which Windows operating system you are using, but the instructions are similar.).
-
How do I use "Screen Area" mode to capture my screenshots?
To create a new project using "Screen Area" mode, select the "New Project" button (or select "File-New" from the menu options). This will open the "New Project" wizard. Start by selecting "Screenshot Project" as your "Project Type" and click "Next". For "Screen Capture Options" select "Screen Area" and click "Next". In the next screen, select the "Slide Size" that you want to use for your project (which can later be changed, if needed, before snapping screenshots) and click "Next". Select your "Screenshot Hotkey" and click "Next". In the "Screenshot Session Assistant" screen, click "Next" to begin your screenshot session. At this point, a dynamic screen capture area (box) will appear on your screen; transparent in the middle with grab handles along its edges and a shaded area around the rest of it. Your cursor will change to a "hand" shape when moved over the inside of the box. You can resize this dynamic area by pointing your cursor at a grab handle, holding down your left mouse button, and dragging to resize the screenshot area. To move the screen capture area, point your cursor inside the box, hold down your left mouse button, and drag it to another position. Once you have your screenshot area set to the proper dimensions and location on your screen, double click anywhere inside the box. This will set the screenshot area. Anything inside this box will be included in your screen captures while everything outside of it will be cut off. Use your hotkey to take screenshots. When finished, click the ViewletBuilder4 icon in the system tray to end your screenshot session. This will return you to the "Screenshot Session Assistant" screen. To create slides from the screenshots you've just taken, select the "Import screenshots into project and create Viewlet" option. Click "Finish" and your slides will be created and shown in Thumbnail View, ready for you to edit.
-
How do I "resize" the dynamic area prior to starting my "Screen Area" screenshot session?
When the dynamic screen capture area first appears on your screen, you will see a transparent box with dashed lines and grab handles surrounded by a shaded area. To resize the screenshot area, point your cursor over one of the grab handles. Then, holding down your left mouse button, just drag the grab handle to resize the screen capture area.
-
Once I've "set" my dynamic screen capture area box, can it be resized or moved during the current screenshot session?
No, once you have double clicked on the dynamic screenshot area to set it into place on your screen to begin capturing screenshots, it cannot be resized nor moved during that particular active screenshot session.
-
How do I insert new screenshots into my current project?
In Thumbnail View, select "Insert" then "Screenshots" from the menu options. This will open the "Capture Screenshots" wizard. The wizard will walk you through the rest of the steps for capturing and adding new screenshots into your current project.
-
If I add new screenshots into an existing project, can I change their screenshot size?
No, once you define a size for your screenshots (slides), you cannot change them even if you add new screenshots to the existing project.
-
Can I change the location of the dynamic screenshot area if inserting new screenshots into an existing project that was created using the "Screen Area" mode?
Yes. To do this, from Thumbnail View, select "Insert" then "Screenshots" from the menu options. Follow the steps to begin your screenshot session. The dynamic screen capture area will appear, based on the dimensions used in your existing project. To move the screenshot area, point your cursor inside the box, hold down your left mouse button and drag it to a new location. Then, double click inside the box to set screen capture area in its new location to begin the screenshot session.
-
If I insert new screenshots into an existing project, where will the slides be placed in my project?
If you don't select a slide before you insert new screenshots, any new screenshots taken will be inserted at the beginning of your project. If you select a slide before inserting new screenshots, all new screenshots taken will be inserted to the right of (after) the selected slide.
-
How do I change my "Hotkey" for taking screenshots?
When creating a new project, the "Create a New Project" wizard will prompt you to define your hotkey in the "Screenshot Hotkey" screen. The default hotkey is the Pause key. To change this option, press the "Define" key. When you see the words "Press Any Key" start flashing, press a key on your keyboard to set it as the new hotkey, which will be used as the hotkey for all new screenshot sessions until it is changed again. In addition to using hotkey, you can also select the option to use "mouse clicks" to capture your screenshots too from this screen. Note: The wizard will allow you to change your hotkey whenever you begin a new screenshot session.
-
What "Hotkey" should I use for taking screenshots?
The default hotkey is the Pause button, which works fine for most situations. However, we do not recommend using keys such as the ESC, Print Screen, or any of the Function Keys for taking screenshots.
-
Can I use more than one key when defining my "Hotkey"?
No, ViewletBuilder will only allow you to use one key when defining your hotkey. However, you can also select the option to use "mouse clicks" in addition to using your hotkey when taking screenshots.
-
What happens after I click on the ViewletBuilder4 icon in my system tray to end my screenshot session?
After clicking on the ViewletBuilder4 icon in the system tray to end your screenshot session, a "Screenshot Session Assistant" screen will appear. Choice one of the options in this screen to "Import screenshots into project and create Viewlet"; "Add more screenshots into current set"; or "Discard screenshots and create a new set." Once you choose an option, click the "Finish" button to activate your choice.
-
Why does the ViewletBuilder4 icon disappear when I mouse over it to end my screenshot session?
This may happen for a variety of reasons while using Full Screen mode, but is always due to some configuration on the computer blocking the screenshot session. If this occurs, open up your “Task Manager” (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and look in the “Processes” tab for any instance of “javaw.exe” running and end it. This will end the ViewletBuilder4 screenshot session. You might have to manually resize your monitor’s resolution back to its original settings if you chose a slide size different from your monitor’s resolution when entering the screenshot session. Then, look in your system tray for any programs that might be conflicting with the screenshot session such as anti-virus, firewall, other screen capture programs, etc., and disable what you can. Then, launch ViewletBuilder4 again and see if this resolves the issue. Also, make sure that your computer is not “locked down”, disallowing you or other programs to change settings (like monitor resolutions) on your computer. This will also cause problems with the screenshot session. You might also try use Screen Area mode (since this will not affect your monitor’s resolution) instead of Full Screen mode, if this continues to be a problem.
-
What size should I use for my slides (screenshots)?
The recommended size for your slides is no bigger than 640 x 480. This will accommodate more of your target application's window (in Full Screen mode), enable viewers with smaller monitors to watch your Viewlets, and increae the efficiency of the playback engine.

-
How do I select multiple images at the same time?
When you are browsing to find your image files, you can select multiple nonadjacent files by clicking on the first one to select it. Then, hold down the CTRL key while selecting the rest of the image files you want to import. To select a series of adjacent files, click on the first file, then, hold down the SHIFT key and click on the last one in the series. This will highlight not only the first and last slide selected, but also all of those in between.
-
Can I import image files that are different heights and widths into the same project?
Yes. The dimensions of your image files may vary, but you can only choose one slide size for all of the slides in your Viewlet project. When your image files are listed in the "Select Images" preview screen, you can place a checkmark next to the images you want to "Scale to Fit". Be careful when using this option because if you scale image files up or down too much, you may lose some of the image quality when ViewletBuilder embeds them onto the slide, scaling them to fit the size of the slides you specified. Please visit the ViewletBuilder4 tutorials page for more information.
-
Is there a preview screen available to see image files before importing them into a Viewlet project?
Once you select the image files you want to import, they will be listed in the "Select Images" preview screen. This screen will list the files in the order in which they were selected, listing the file name, size (dimensions) and a scale to fit option. An image preview panel is available to the right of this screen. To load an image into the preview panel, click on it to select it.
-
How do I remove an image from the preview screen?
If you see an image listed in the preview screen that you don't want to add to your project, just highlight it to select it. Then, press the "Remove Selected" button to remove it from the list.
-
In what order are the slides created from the image files?
The slides will be created, starting at slide number one, starting with the first image listed in the preview screen on down the list.
-
Can the order of images be moved around in the preview screen prior to importing them into the Viewlet project?
No. Images are listed in the order they are selected. However, once images are rendered in Thumbnail View, they can easily be moved around.
-
What does the "Scale to Fit" option do?
If your image files do not match the slide size exactly, you can select the "Scale to Fit" option. By doing this, when ViewletBuilder converts your image files to slides, it will scale your images up or down to fill in the background of the slide completely.
-
Can I pick and choose which image files I want to "Scale to Fit"?
Yes, you can choose all, several, or none at all.
-
If the dimensions of my image files are bigger than the size of my slide and I do NOT select the "Scale to Fit" option, will parts of my image file get cropped off?
Yes, if the dimensions of your image file (height and width) are larger than the slide size, and you do not scale it to fit it on the slide, you may see edges of your image file cropped when rendered as a slide background image.
-
If my image files are smaller then the size of my slides and I do NOT select "Scale to Fit", what will happen?
If the imported images are smaller than the size chosen for your slides, the images will remain the same size and will be embedded in the center of the slide background when rendered in Thumbnails View.
-
After creating an images project, can I change the location of the embedded image on any of the slides?
No. When you create a new images project with imported images, the images are added to the slide background, they are embedded and cannot be realigned or moved. However, you can change the slide background at anytime while working inside ViewletBuilder.
-

-
Is there an option to add more than one blank slide when creating a Blank Project?

-
Can I choose the background color of a slide when creating a new Blank Project?

-
How do I add cursors to a project created using the Blank Project option?
In previous versions of ViewletBuilder, if you created a project without cursors, you would need to take at least one screenshot with a cursor in it to activate the cursor option. This has changed. Now, if you create a new project without cursors, all you have to do to add a cursor is go into Slide View and select the "arrow" (show cursor) icon from the Tools palette to insert a cursor. Or, while in Slide View, you can select "Insert" then "Cursor" from the menu options to insert a new cursor. If the cursor you need is not available, just take a screenshot with the cursor you need, go into that slide in Slide View, select the cursor, and then open the “Cursor Shape Library”. This action will add the new cursor to your cursor library, making it available for this and other Viewlet projects.
-
Once I create a new Blank Project, can I change the size of my slides?
No, once you specify a size for your slides in any Viewlet project, the size cannot be changed.
-
Can additional slides or screenshots be added to Blank Projects?

What are the files and folders that make up my ViewletBuilder4 project?
Each new ViewletBuilder4 project is saved in a single project folder, using the name designated when saving your project for the first time. The project folder contents will vary, based on what is selected in the Viewlet Profile screen. At a minimum, each project folder will contain:
.qvp (file):
This is the project's source file, containing all the screenshots, imported images, audio, etc., embedded into this single source file. This qvp file is what is opened and edited inside ViewletBuilder4.
.qv~ (file):
This is the project's backup source file. If needed, a project may be restored from the backup file by changing the last character from a "~" to a "p".
.viewlet (folder):
This folder contains the project's compiled files including a single .swf (Flash) file and a single _viewlet_swf.html file (the Viewlet's launcher page).
.swf (file):
This is the compiled Viewlet file (found in the .viewlet folder and the .zip file) that can be played back through a browser that contains a Flash (5.0 or better) plugin or through a Flash (5.0 or better) stand-alone player.
_viewlet_swf.html (file):
This is a sample HTML file created when a project is compiled. This file has the Viewlet embedded into it and is used to launch it in a browser.

In these cases, if you have any problems opening your source .qvp file and do not see a backup .qv~ file in the project folder, you MIGHT be able to restore the project from the last save by renaming the “.qvp.TMP” extension to .qvp.

Can I rename my Viewlet project?
If, for any reason, you want to rename your Viewlet project, the best way to do it is by using the SaveAs function inside ViewletBuilder. Open your existing project inside ViewletBuilder. Then, select File-SaveAs from the menu options. Make sure to browse to a different location OUTSIDE of your current project folder when using the SaveAs feature and give your project a new name. Then, press the Save button. This will cleanly save your newly named project into its own new project folder, based on the name chosen.
-
When should I use SaveAs when saving my Viewlet projects?
If you want to rename your projects, or just want to save various copies of your project to different locations on your computer, you can use the SaveAs feature to do this quickly. Also, if you are converting Viewlets originally created in either ViewletBuilder2 or ViewletBuilder3, we suggest that after converting the project inside ViewletBuilder, use the SaveAs feature to save the project to a different location on your computer. In this way, it will set up a clean project folder structure, keeping all of the various files and folders associated with the Viewlet in the same project folder.

-
How many slides can my Viewlet have?
We recommend using no more than 100 to 150 slides for effective playback on lower speed Internet connections. And, obviously, you want to keep your viewer's attention, so the smaller the Viewlet, the better. If you start adding imported graphics or audio, you might want to consider using fewer slides too. The main point to consider when creating projects is your target audience (what is their connection speed, what size monitor will they be using, etc.). Taylor your authoring strategy accordingly to create Viewlets to meet their needs.
-
If my screenshots don't include cursors, can I still add cursors to my slides?
Visit our ViewletBuilder4 tutorials page for more information on working with cursors.

To move multiple, sequential slides, click on the first slide in the sequence. Then, hold down the "Shift" key and click on the last slide in the sequence. Let go of the "Shift" key and drag and drop the slides into place. You can also move nonadjacent slides (just like you would sequential slides), but you hold down the "Ctrl" key as you select each of your slides. You can also cut and paste slides to change their order. See our ViewletBuilder4 tutorials page to watch a demo on this topic.

Why should I hide slides instead of deleting them?
Once you delete a slide and save your file, that slide is permanently deleted. So, if you decide later on that you really needed that slide, you're out of luck. The alternative to deleting slides is to hide them instead. Hidden slides remain in the Viewlet, but when the Viewlet is played, the hidden slides do not appear. This way, even though you may not be using hidden slides in a Viewlet, you can keep them until you decide you no longer need them.
-
How do I hide / unhide slides?
One way to hide a slide is while you are in Thumbnail View. Click on the "eye" icon on the slide you want to hide and a red "X" will appear over this icon. This indicates that the slide is now hidden and will not appear when the Viewlet is played back from within ViewletBuilder or in the compiled Viewlet. To unhide the slide, just click on the "eye" again to remove the red "X". Or, if you are in Slide View and want to hide a slide, just click on the slide itself and then click on the icon on the Context Sensitive Toolbar to hide the slide. -
Is there a limit to the number or file sizes of graphics that I can import?
No, there isn't, but we suggest that you do not import a large quantity of images, nor image files that are large in size because this will only add "bulk" to the final Viewlet. For faster loading Viewlets, the fewer images (and smaller file sizes) you import, the quicker your Viewlet will play back.
-
Can inserted images be edited in ViewletBuilder?
After you import an image onto a slide in Slide View, if you click on it, you will see "grab handles" along the edges of the image. You can resize your image right on the slide by clicking on one of these grab handles and, while holding down your left mouse button, resize the object. Be careful when doing this, though, because at some point, if the image is resized too much, it might lose its "visual" integrity. You can also move an imported image around the slide by clicking on it to display the grab handles. Then, holding down the left mouse button, simply drag and drop the image where you want it to appear on the slide. You can also select the inserted image to add a border to it or change it opacity level using the icons on the Context Sensitive Toolbar.

By experimenting with different image quality levels for the compiled Viewlet, you can reduce the size of the compiled Viewlet if needed. Note: This option is not needed for projects comprised mainly of screenshots.

-
Do I need a balloon or note inserted on the slide before I can record sound?
No. Audio (sound) is attached to each slide; therefore, no balloons or notes are required. However, since sound is attached to a slide, sound clips will not play across slides.
-
Can I play audio across several slides?
No, audio is attached to an individual slide and cannot be made to play across slides inside ViewletBuilder.

-
How can I tell if a slide already has audio?
If the "play button" icon in the Sound Palette is grayed out, then the slide does not contain audio. However, if you’re not certain if a slide has a sound file, click on the microphone in the Sound Palette to start a recording session. If there is already a sound clip present on the slide, you will get a warning screen saying the slide contains audio. You then have the option to record/import to override the current file or cancel to keep the current file.

-
How can I improve the quality of my voiceovers in my Viewlet?
There are many ways to improve the quality of "voiceovers" in your Viewlets. First, create a test Viewlet and practice recording your voice several different ways. Speak loud, soft, slow, fast, closer to the microphone, further away from the microphone, etc. Then, each time you record, play it back to yourself and listen to how it sounds. Can you understand what you are saying? Is there any distracting background noise? Does your voice maintain an even tempo and volume during playback? If you are not used to hearing a recording of your own voice, don't be too critical. Just keep practicing until you feel comfortable with what you hear. Perhaps you can even have a friend or family member listen and give you some feedback. Also, working with a good, quality microphone--one that you are comfortable using--can really help improve your voiceovers.
-
What audio format does ViewletBuilder use when recording audio inside the program?
ViewletBuilder will detect your sound card when you record audio. In most cases it will record in CD quality: 44.1Khz, 16bit, Mono format. Please visit our ViewletBuilder4 tutorials page for more information on working with audio in Viewlet projects.
-
When I record in ViewletBuilder, why do I get a warning that my sound is too soft?
You may need to enable the "boost" on your microphone through your Windows operating system. To do this, locate the "speaker icon" in the system tray (near your clock). Right click on it and select "Open Volume Controls". This will open a "Play Control" screen. On this screen, look for the "Microphone" option (Note: If the Microphone option is not displayed, make sure your microphone is plugged into your system.) Under the volume control sliding bar for the Microphone option, click on the "Advanced" button. This will open an "Advanced Controls for Microphone" screen. Look near the bottom of this screen for an option that says "Microphone Boost" and place a checkmark in the box next to it. Then, close this screen and adjust the volume of your microphone in the Play Control screen to midrange. By doing this, a boost will be added to your microphone when recording and this should clear up the "sound too soft" error message.

What is a Hyperlink?
A hyperlink is a “clickable” area that can connect to a web site, email address, another document, or another place in the same document, or in this case, a Viewlet. For more information about working with hyperlinks in Viewlets, visit the ViewletBuilder4 tutorials page.
-
How do I add a Hyperlink to a slide?
You can create a transparent shape object and place it over the area of the slide you want for the hyperlink. Then, right click on the shape to select the Hyperlink option from the right click menu. You can also select an "inserted picture" on a slide and right click to select the hyperlink option. Also, if you highlight text in a balloon, note or slide text object and right click, you will see a hyperlink option available too.
-
How do I hyperlink to a web site?
In the hyperlink window, click on the “Enabled” box and select web site for the "target". Then simply type in the web site address including the http://.
-
How do I hyperlink to an email address?
In the hyperlink screen, click on the “Enabled” box and select email for the "target". Then, after the mailto: type in the email address.
-
Can I use a hyperlink to "jump to" other slides in the same Viewlet?
Yes, in the hyperlink screen, you will see an option under the "target" menu for slide.
-
What if the slide I'm linked to changes numbers after I'm done editing?
No problem. ViewletBuilder will automatically update the link if the slide number changes due to inserted or deleted slides.
-
Can I link directly to another file?
Yes, but there is a little trick to doing this since there is no straight forward option in the hyperlink window to allow this. To link directly to another file, select “Enabled”. Then, for the “Target”, chose “Web”. In the field next to “Web” where you would normally put in a full URL, clear out this field and type in JUST the file name (no path). Under “Destination” choose your option (we recommend new window). Finally, make sure to place a copy of the “linked to” file in the SAME folder with this Viewlet (whether it’s served on a web server, CD, etc.) By default, when the link is clicked, since there is no “URL path” to find the file, HTML code will “look” in the same folder for this file.
-
Can I link a series of Viewlets together?
Yes, but there is a little trick to doing this since there is no straight forward option in the hyperlink window to allow this. On the last slide of your Viewlet, add an object or text to use as the hyperlink. In the hyperlink screen, to link directly to another Viewlet, select “Enabled”. Then, for the “Target”, chose “Web”. In the field next to “Web” where you would normally put in a full URL, clear out this field and type in JUST the file name (no path) for the Viewlet. We recommend linking to the Viewlet’s HTML file that ends in “_viewlet_swf.html”. Under “Destination” choose your option (we recommend same window if all of your Viewlets in this series use the same slide size). Finally, make sure to place a copy of the “linked to” Viewlet files (including the HTML and the .swf files) in the SAME folder with this Viewlet (whether it’s served on a web server, CD, etc.) By default, when the link is clicked, since there is no “URL path” to find the file, HTML code will “look” in the same folder for this Viewlet file.
-
Does the hyperlink feature support additional javascript commands?
No, the hyperlink does not support additional javascript commands.
-
How many hyperlinks can I have per slide?
There is no real limit on how many hyperlinks you can add to the same slide. But, if adding hyperlinks to a slide, we also suggest adding a Pause Zone to that same slide to allow time for the viewer to see and interact with the hyperlink, as needed.
-
How will I know if a hyperlink has been added to the slide?
A “chain link” symbol will appear on hyperlinked shapes or inserted pictures. And, by default, hyperlinked text will appear as blue, underlined text until changed.
-
Will the "chain link" on my shape or inserted picture always be visible?
No. The “hyperlink” (chain link) symbol appears only in the source file and not in the compiled Viewlet. In the complied Viewlet, when the viewer moves the mouse over the area, the cursor will change to a hand, indicating a hyperlink.
-
How do I delete a Hyperlink?
There are several ways to do this. Perhaps the easiest way is to select the hyperlinked shape or inserted picture and hit the delete button on the keyboard. To remove a text hyperlink, highlight the text, right click, and select Hyperlink. Then, remove the checkmark from the "Enabled" button in the hyperlink screen.
-
What does the “New Window” option mean?
If the “Target” is web, and you select “New Window” for your “Destination” option, when the link is clicked, it will open the target object in a new browser window.
-
What does the “Same Window” option mean?
If the “Target” is web, and you select “Same Window” for your “Destination” option, when link is clicked, the target object will open in the same window, replacing the Viewlet file.
-
What are the “Custom” options and how do I use them?
If the “Target” is web, and you select “Custom” for your “Destination” option, you will see additional options. These options are for use by advanced designers who work with frameset pages and we do not provide any further instructions for this feature since advanced designers will already know how to use these options.
-
Does ViewletBuilder have an “auto close” feature to close the browser when the Viewlet is finished playing?
No, there is no option to do this inside the ViewletBuilder program, nor do we provide instructions on how to do since it is beyond the normal scope of product features.
-
Should I add a Pause Zone to slides that contain hyperlinks?
Yes. You will want to give the viewer time to click the hyperlink. Adding a pause zone to the same slide forces the Viewlet to pause, requiring user intervention, like clicking on a hyperlink, to proceed.
-
Can I preview hyperlinks?
Yes, you can preview all hyperlinks while inside the ViewletBuilder program while in play mode. But, we recommend previewing the compiled Flash file for best results.

What happens to my image files when creating an Images Project?
After creating a new project directly from a set of image files, the images are embedded as slide backgrounds. For more information, visit the ViewletBuilder4 tutorials page to watch a demo on this topic.
-
How do I import an image file as a slide background?
You can import an image in either Slide or Thumbnail View. On the Context Sensitive Toolbar, click on the “Slide Background Image” button and the “Select Picture” screen will appear. Browse to where your images are stored and select an image file and then choose to open it. The image will be embedded as your slide background.

-
What image file types does ViewletBuilder support?
When you select to insert an image for your slide background, the “files of type” will appear at the bottom of the “Select Picture” screen showing the supported file types. Most any common image file type can be used as a slide background.
-
How do I remove an embedded image from my slide?

-
How do I replace the background image?
With the slide selected, click the “Slide Background Image” button and a “Remove or Replace Background” screen will appear. This screen gives you the option to “remove”, “replace”, or “cancel”. Simply select the “replace” button, browse to select a new image file, and your newly selected image will replace the old image.
-
Will my embedded images cover the entire slide?
If your image files are smaller than the slide size, you will be prompted to scale the image to fit the slide size. Depending upon the difference in the height and width of the image file compared to the slide size dimensions, ViewletBuilder will scale the picture as much as it possibly can to fill the entire slide.
-
Are there scaling options for images used as slide backgrounds?
Yes, when importing images as slide backgrounds for new or existing slides, there are scale-to-fit prompts and options. If the image (height and width) is smaller than the slide size and you select scale-to-fit, the image will be scaled to fill as much of the entire slide as possible, though, in most cases, it will fill the entire slide. If the image is larger, and this scaling option is chosen, the same thing will occur. If, however, the image is smaller and you do NOT choose the scaling option, the image will be centered on the slide. If the image is larger and no scaling option is chosen, parts of the image will be cropped when the image is embedded as a slide background.
-
Can I add balloons and notes to the embedded background images?
Yes. The background image slide acts just like any other screenshot slide. Since the image is embedded, you can add balloons, notes, slide text, and graphics, etc.
-

-
Why am I not receiving email scores after uploading the Viewlet to my web server?
Viewers must be connected to the Internet and input the correct password in the Login screen in order for email scores to be sent. However, if both these requirements are being met and the emails are still not being received, it may be due to a server configuration issue. The web server on which the viewlet is hosted needs to allow outgoing http requests to scripts/html pages hosted in different domains than the one in which the viewlet is hosted. So, the domain should allow scripts to be called from www.qarbon.com. For security purposes the web servers are sometimes configured to not allow such requests. Viewlets make an HTTP request with the score and recipient email data. So letting the production, hosting server allow outbound traffic to http://services.qarbon.com will also be needed.
-
Can I have email scores sent to more than one email address at the same time?
No, you can program a Viewlet to send email scores to only one recipient at a time.
-
How do I preview the results of my Click Zone?
You can preview the results while in "play mode" inside ViewletBuilder while in Slide View. For best results, preview your results in the compiled Viewlet when playing it back in a browser or Flash stand-alone player.

So, the domain should allow scripts to be called from services.qarbon.com. For security purposes the web servers are sometimes configured to not allow such requests. Also, the Viewlets only make a JSP (Java server page) call, just like an HTML call with the score and recipient email data. So letting the production, hosting server allow outbound traffic to services.qarbon.com will also be needed.
The full location of the jsp page is:
http://services.qarbon.com/client/statsmailer

Can I have email scores sent to more than one email address at the same time?

Yes, depending upon which browser the Viewlet is launched in. Sometimes, keystroke combinations may work in preview mode while playing back the Viewlet prior to compilation inside ViewletBuilder, but then do not work when played back in a browser. This is because certain keystroke combinations are reserved by browser or Flash plug-in and supercede the Viewlet. There is no workaround for this. You can, however, go to the ViewletBuilder4 tutorials page on our site to watch the “Keystroke Zone” demo. At the end of this demo is a list of keystroke combinations that you might want to avoid.

What this means is that at some point, the viewer must click inside the Viewlet’s playing area to set the focus (for the Flash plug-in) in the Viewlet. Once this is done, the Keystroke Zone slides and user input will be recognized.

-
Can I print slides from a network printer?
If you experience issues while printing slides via a network printer, the problem may be due to an incompatibility issue with ViewletBuilder and the configuration of the network printer. And, in these types of situations, it is hard to troubleshoot since each network configuration varies and it would be hard to pinpoint what exactly on the network configuration is causing the problem. So, if you experience issues while printing from a network printer, try printing from a stand-alone printer, if possible. Or, use the File-Export option inside ViewletBuilder, select the PDF format to create a PDF document of your slides and export the slides this way first. Then, close ViewletBuilder; launch the PDF document in the Acrobat Reader (Adobe) and print directly from the PDF file.
-

Compiling (Publishing) a Viewlet
-
What does "compiling" a Viewlet mean?
After you are finished working on the source (.qvp) file inside the ViewletBuilder program, you need to "compile" your Viewlet to create another set of files that you will use to publish on your web site, copy to CD, etc. The compiled (published) files are independent of the source (.qvp) file, so each time you make any edits to your Viewlet source file, you must recompile to update your "compiled" (published) Viewlet files that the end viewer will see. For more information on this topic, please visit the ViewletBuilder4 tutorials page.
-
How do I compile a Viewlet?
Once you are finished editing and saving your source (.qvp) file, you need to open the Viewlet Profile screen. From Thumbnail View, select "Viewlet-Profile" from the menu options (or click on the "Compile" icon on the toolbar). If in Slide View, you can select the "Compile" icon in the Tools Palette. This will open the "Viewlet Profile" screen, where you can select your compilation options and also a click a button to compile your Viewlet. For more information on this topic, please visit the ViewletBuilder4 tutorials page.
-
What is the Viewlet Profile screen?
The Viewlet Profile screen is the screen that appears before you can compile your Viewlet. In the Viewlet Profile screen, you will see various options to choose for the compilation process.
-
How do I access the Viewlet Profile screen to compile my Viewlet?
There are several ways to do this. From Thumbnail View, select "Viewlet-Profile" from the menu options (or click on the "Compile" icon on the toolbar). If in Slide View, you can select the "Compile" icon in the Tools Palette.
-
What is the Summary section of the Viewlet Profile screen?
The Summary section provides information pertaining to your Viewlet. It includes items such as subject, authoring info, location where project is saved and the version of Flash used to compile (publish) the Viewlet.
-
In the Subject section (Viewlet Profile), what information should I input?
In the Viewlet Profile screen, you must include a title for your Viewlet. By default, it will use the name chosen for your source file. You can change this at anytime. When the end viewer launches the Viewlet, whatever you use for the title is what will be displayed in the browser's blue bar. But, if you change the title in this field, it will NOT change the actual title of your source (.qvp) file. The description field is optional.
-
Where can I add Author information for my Viewlet?
In the Viewlet Profile screen, select the "Author" view. You will see two tabs "Personal" and "Company" where you can input additional authoring information. Name, email, comments and Web site addresses will be visiible in the "Author Profile Panel" of your compiled Viewlet.
-
Can I change the company name embedded in the Author info section?
Yes, this field can be edited.
-
What "player bars" are available for my compiled Viewlet?
In the Viewlet Profile screen, in the "Player Bars" view, you will see three options for player bars. You can use a "standard" player bar, which loads at the bottom of the Viewlet and adds approximately 16 pixels to the height of the playing area. Or, you can choose "kiosk", which will located in the upper right corner of the compiled Viewlet and retracts when not in use. Or, you can choose to have no player bar at all applied when compiling your Viewlet.
-
How do I choose the sound quality level for my compiled Viewlet?
Open the Viewlet Profile screen and select the "Sound Quality" option. In this view, you will see several choices for sound quality for the compiled Viewlet. If you choose a quality setting "lower" than the audio quality in your source (.qvp) file, the audio quality selected will only be affected in the compiled Viewlet, not in the source file. Also, if you are using a lower quality audio setting in your source file than what is available in the Viewlet Profile screen, your audio will remain the same as what is in the source file (it's quality cannot be upgraded using these selections, only reduced).
-
If my Viewlet has sound, can I compile it without sound without removing the audio from my source file?
Yes. In the Viewlet Profile screen, select the "Sound Quality" option. In this view, you will see an option to "Strip all sounds" from the compiled Viewlet. When selecting this option, your Viewlet will be compiled without audio, however, it will not affect your source (.qvp) file.
-
Can I choose an image quality for the compiled Viewlet?
Yes, in the Viewlet Profile screen, select the "Image Quality" option. In this view, you will see three options for the image quality level for your compiled Viewlet. By choosing a lower image quality setting, it will reduce the file size of your compiled Viewlet, but ONLY if your Viewlets contains imported images (as slide backgrounds) or a lot of imported image files. If your project consists mainly of screenshots taken by ViewletBuilder, changing the image quality for your compiled Viewlet will have very little effect on size of your compiled Viewlet.
-
How does the "Timing" option in the Viewlet Profile screen affect my compiled Viewlet?
After previewing your Viewlet, if you need to slow it down or speed it up globally, you can change the settings in this view and it will be applied to your entire project. Be careful when changing these settings since they will affect the timing (or slide delay) of your source file as well for all slides.
-
Can I compile in different languages?
Yes, you can choose the language option to compile in one of the available languages for localization purposes. However, compiling in a different language will NOT change (translate) the text contained in the project (for balloons, notes, slide text) into the language chosen for compilation. You must manually edit the text for translation purposes.
-
Is there an option for looping a Viewlet?
Yes, in the Viewlet Profile screen, select the "Advanced" option. Under "Miscellaneous", select "Loop mode" and then compile your Viewlet.
-
Can I apply a "fading effect" to balloons and notes in my compiled Viewlet?
Yes. In the Viewlet Profile screen, select the "Advanced" option. Under "Miscellaneous", select the option to apply "Rapid fading effects on balloons and notes" and then compile your Viewlet.
-
Can I apply a "fading effect" to individual balloons and notes for the compiled Viewlet?

You will need to copy the source code from this page to your own web page.
-
Does ViewletBuilder automatically create a .zip file of my compiled Viewlets?
No, you must select this option prior to compiling. In the Viewlet Profile screen, select the "Advanced" option. Under "Miscellaneous", select the option to "Create a zip file". Then, compile your Viewlet. The zip file will be created and saved in your Viewlet's project folder.
-
How do I create an executable Viewlet file?
In the Viewlet Profile screen, select the "Advanced" option. Under "Miscellaneous", you will see an option to "Create an executable file". After selecting this option, compile your Viewlet. ViewletBuilder will create a .exe file and place it in your Viewlet's project folder inside the .viewlet folder.
-
What is an executable Viewlet file?
If you choose to create an executable Viewlet file when compiling, ViewletBuilder will combine the Flash 5 stand alone player with your Viewlet .swf file into one single executable (.exe) file. When double clicked, the .exe file will play the Viewlet on computers without the need for a browser or Flash 5 stand alone player.
-
How do I close a full screen Viewlet exe file?
In order to close a full screen exe file, you must press Alt+F4 on your keyboard. In order for your viewers to know this, you should put some type of instructions in your Viewlet if you create these types of Viewlets for your audience so that they will know how to close them.
-
What is LMS?
LMS stands for Learning Management System.
-
Are Viewlets AICC or SCORM compliant?
Yes, Viewlets compiled with ViewletBuilder4.2.1 (or later) are SCORM 1.2 compliant. AICC compliance is defined in levels, with ViewletBuilder4.2.1 being compliant with Level 1 (basically the same criteria used to define SCORM 1.2 compliance).
-
How do I integrate Viewlets into my LMS?
In the Viewlet Profile - Advanced screen, you must select the option for compiling with Learning Management System support. All files generated by compilation need to be uploaded to the LMS (besides any exe files or the zip file, of course). These compiled files are contained in the project folder in the .viewlet folder.
To add to the LMS:
-Upload all the files to LMS in whatever way the corresponding LMS uploads any content. This process may vary and we do not provide specific instructions for this.
-Point to the xxxx_launcher.html file (or xxxx_viewlet_swf.html file), as the content's entry point, which again the LMS would prompt for and is a regular procedure for any uploading any content to an LMS.
Here's some additional info for the LMS functions and files compiled by ViewletBuilder4:
-For SCORM, the LMS functions are in a file called APIWrapper.js file, and
-For AICC, the functions are in the following files:
xxxx_handler.html
xxxx_content.html
xxxx_host.html
trigger.html
We do not provide any other instructions beyond this. So, if you have any additional questions about the upload procedure into the LMS, etc., not covered here, you need to contact the support team for your own LMS vendor.
-
Are Viewlets 508 compliant?
Yes they are, the output format supports Flash 6 which is 508-compliant. This means that any content created using ViewletBuilder can be made accessible to people with certain disabilities. The authoring tool itself, ViewletBuilder, is not 508-compliant.
-
If my Viewlet contains scores, can I get the scoring results via email?
Yes, if the Viewlet contains scored slides, you can have these results sent to a specified email address. In the Viewlet Profile screen, select the Advanced option. In the Scoring section of this screen, input an email address and password where required. When the Viewlet Flash file is played back, a Login screen will appear, prompting the viewer to input a Login and a password. If the password is entered correctly, the email results will be sent. If the password is NOT correctly entered, no email results will be sent.
-
What information is included in the email scoring results?
The email sent for scoring results includes: user (name input into Login field when Viewlet was launched); total questions (scored slides only); correct answers (scored slides only); number of attempts (scored slides only); and total score.
-
Why am I not receiving email scores after uploading the Viewlet to my web server?
Viewers must be connected to the Internet and input the correct password in the Login screen in order for email scores to be sent. However, if both these requirements are being met and the emails are still not being received, it may be due to a server configuration issue. The web server on which the viewlet is hosted needs to allow outgoing http requests to scripts/html pages hosted in different domains than the one in which the viewlet is hosted.
-
Can I have email scores sent to more than one email address at the same time?
No, you can program a Viewlet to send email scores to only one recipient at a time.
-
What version of Flash can be used to compile?
ViewletBuilder4 offers the option of compiling in Flash 5 or Flash 6.
-
What does the “compress movie” option do?
If you need to save space on your web server, you can choose this option to compress the Flash file, for storage purposes only. Once the Viewlet is played back, however, the initial load time may be a bit slower as the movie is uncompressed for viewing purposes.
-
Can I change the height and width of my compiled Viewlet?
There is an option in the Viewlet Profile – Extras screen where you can change Viewlet Dimensions. This will change the size of the play back of the Flash file ONLY if it is launched from the _viewlet_swf.html file. Changing these dimensions will NOT change the dimensions of the source .qvp files nor the Flash (.swf) file itself. Be careful when using this feature. Any scaling done to the original project may (or may not) result in some distortion in image quality.
-
What are "Animated Extras"?
This is a feature found in the Viewlet Profile screen in the "Advanced" view. If you have custom Flash (SWF) files (created with Flash 5 or Flash 6), you can use this feature to insert them at the beginning (intro) and end (outro) of your compiled Viewlet. After compiling, one single Viewlet (SWF) file will be produced, including your custom files as part of the entire Viewlet demo.
-
Is audio supported in custom Flash files using the Animated Extras option?
Yes, if your custom Flash file is created in Flash 6 and contains audio, AND you compile using Flash 6 version, audio will be supported.
-
What is a ViewletSkin?
In the Viewlet Profile screen, in the "ViewletSkins" view, you will see a list of ViewletSkins available for your compiled Viewlet. The skin is the "look" (colors, style, etc.) applied to the player bars and the area around the complied Viewlet. If you are a Pro user, you can select the "Refresh list" button to download additional ViewletSkins (if available) to use with your compiled Viewlet.
-
What does the HTML Edition feature do?
The HTML Edition screen allows you to view the HTML page of the Viewlet’s HTML page (the _viewlet_swf.html file used to launch the Viewlet from). In this screen, you can add extra coding for branding purposes and edit some of the code that is in black. You cannot, however, edit any of the code in red. And, if compiling with AICC options, this HTML coding is contained in the _content.html file.
-
What does the “Reset to standard code” button do?
If you want to go back to the default HTML coding at anytime, you can press this button to instantly change the code back to ViewletBuilder4’s default settings.
-
What does the "Save" button in the Viewlet Profile screen do?
If you make changes anywhere in the Viewlet Profile screen, but are not ready to compile, you can click the "Save" button to save the changes and return back to editing your project. Clicking the "Save" button will save changes in the Viewlet Profile screen, but it will NOT save other changes made to your Viewlet's source (.qvp) file.
-
How do I preview my compiled Viewlet?
Directly after compiling a Viewlet, click on the "View It" button in the "Viewlet Compiliation" screen. This will launch your default browser so you can watch the Viewlet. Or, if you have previously compiled your Viewlet, you can select (from Thumbnail View), "Viewlet-View" from the menu options. Outside of ViewletBuilder, you can also browse to find and double click the Viewlet's _viewlet_swf.html file to open it in your default browser.
-
Where are my compiled Viewlet files saved?
Your compiled Viewlet files are saved in your Viewlet's project folder in the .viewlet folder.
-
Where can I get additional help for using ViewletBuilder4?
Qarbon offers several resources for obtaining instant help while working with ViewletBuilder4. If you are connected to the Internet while working inside VieweltBuilder4, just select "Help" then "ViewletBuilder Help" from the menu options (or, just press F1). It will take you to our site where you can find links for additional help options. Or, go to the Help section of our site for additional resources. You can also take advantage of our Training services. Finally, if you cannot find the answers you seek, please feel free to Contact Us with any questions or concerns you may have.
-
Where can I get more information on what the viewer needs to watch a Viewlet?
Viewlets compiled (published) in ViewletBuilder4 can be exported using the Flash 5 or Flash 6 format. These files can be played back in browsers that have the appropriate Flash plug-in installed or in a compatible Flash stand-alone player. If a viewer tries to play a Viewlet through a browser, and either no Flash plug-in is detected, or an upgraded Flash plug-in is required, they will automatically be prompted to download and install it.
If you already have an older version of the Flash plug-in, and you haven't been prompted to download the Flash plug-in, please go to the Macromedia Flash download page.
-
Where are my compiled Viewlet files saved?
Your compiled Viewlet files are saved in your Viewlet's project folder in the .viewlet folder.
-
How do I add a link to launch a Viewlet on my own web page?
There are many different web design programs to use, so specific instructions are hard to provide. Essentially, though, you should link to the _viewlet_swf.html file, which is the Viewlet's launcher page.
-
What files do I need in order for the Viewlet to play?
At a minimum, the Viewlet's .swf and the _viewlet_swf.html file must be in the same folder in order for the Viewlet to play.
-
Can I copy Viewlets to CD?
Yes, you just copy the same files your would to your CD as you would if you were uploading them to a web server. All of the files contained in the .viewlet folder (the .swf and the _viewlet_swf.html file) must be in the same folder on the CD in order for the Viewlet to play. And, you can place all of your compiled Viewlet files in the same folder as well.
-
How Do I Email a Viewlet?
You have several options to use when emailing Viewlets. Here's a few:
Creating an executable Viewlet:
- Inside ViewletBuilder4, with a project open, open the Viewlet Profile screen (that's the screen you see when you go to compile).
- Switch to the Advanced tab.
- Under Stand Alone Projector, select the option next to "Create an executable file...(exe)".
- Compile the project.
This will create a stand alone Viewlet (that combines the Viewlet .swf file and the Flash projector into a single file that can be played on a computer without the need for a browser. Attach the .exe file (found in the project folder's .viewlet folder) to the email. Instruct the viewer to save it to the hard drive and then double click it to play it back.
Note: Some email clients do not allow exe files as email attachments for security reasons. If this is the case, you may need to send a .zip file instead.
Create a ZIP file that contains the Viewlet files:
- Inside ViewletBuilder4, with a project open, open the Viewlet Profile screen (that's the screen you see when you go to compile).
- Switch to the Advanced tab.
- Under Miscellaneous, select the option to "Create a zip file".
- Compile the project.
ViewletBuilder4 will then create a file ending in .zip with copies of all of the compiled files (based on your choices in the Viewlet Profile screen). This .zip will be found in the project folder. Attach this .zip file to the email with instructions to the end user to:
- Open the .zip file (WinZip needs to be installed on the end user's computer to do this).
- Extract all files to the SAME folder on the hard drive (do not try to play the Viewlet from inside WinZip, it will not work).
- Close WinZip.
- Browse to the folder containing the extracted files.
- Double click the file ending in _viewlet_swf.html
This will launch the Viewlet in the computer's default browser. Note: The end user's computer must have an applicable Flash plug-in installed in order to view the Viewlet when using this approach.
-
What is FTP?
FTP is an acronym meaning "File Transfer Protocol". In technical terms, FTP is a client-server protocol that allows a user on one computer to transfer files to and from another computer over a TCP/IP network. This term is also used for programs used to accomplish this type of file transfer.
-
What does "upload" or "download" of files mean?
When you move files from your computer to a web server, for example, you are actually "uploading" them. And, the reverse is true as well. When moving files from your web server to your computer, you are, essentially, "downloading" them. These terms, upload and download, are often used to describe file transfer operations when using FTP programs.
-
How do I upload my Viewlets to a web server?
You can use the built-in FTP tool inside ViewletBuilder to upload your Viewlets to a web server. After compiling, when the "Viewlet Compiliation" screen appears, click on the "Upload Viewlet" tab and fill in the appropriate information in this screen. Then, click the "Upload" button. Or, you can use an external FTP program to upload your Viewlet files (outside of the ViewletBuilder program).
-
Do I need to purchase an FTP program to upload files to a web server?
The choice is up to you. ViewletBuilder contains a simple FTP tool that you can use to upload the Viewlet currently open in the program to a web server. Though this built-in FTP tool inside ViewletBuilder works fine for most customers, there are some who prefer to use a different FTP program due to incompatability issues with our tool and their server, the need for more control over file transfers, etc.
-
What are the advantages and limitations of ViewletBuilder's built-in FTP tool?
The advantages of ViewletBuilder's built-in FTP tool are that it is very easy to use, uploads your Viewlet while inside ViewletBuilder, and pratically automates the entire FTP process for you. While it is satisfactory for a lot of our customers, it also has some limitations. Since it is just a simple FTP tool, it will only upload files in "passive mode" (an option that cannot be changed) and some servers don't accept this mode of transfer. And, you must open your Viewlet project inside ViewletBuilder first in order to upload it using this built-in tool and it will only upload one set of Viewlet files at a time.
-
Where can I get additional help for using ViewletBuilder4?
Qarbon offers several resources for obtaining instant help while working with ViewletBuilder4. If you are connected to the Internet while working inside VieweltBuilder4, just select "Help" then "ViewletBuilder Help" from the menu options (or, just press F1). It will take you to our site where you can find links for additional help options. Or, go to the Help section of our site for additional resources. You can also take advantage of our Training services. Finally, if you cannot find the answers you seek, please feel free to Contact Us with any questions or concerns you may have.
Known Issues / Resolutions
-
I signed up for a download, but never received an email response.
If you are trying to download the demo version of any of our products and provided your email address on the download form, you should receive an email response within minutes, which includes a link to download the product. If, however, you do not receive this email, please contact support@qarbon.com and state that you did not receive a download email for whatever product you are trying to download. Our support team will then email you an alternate download link.
-
I am trying to download ViewletBuilder4, but it never fully downloads, why?
When you are downloading ViewletBuilder4 and experience problems where the download starts and then “times out”, this may be due to heavy traffic (lots of downloads occurring at that time). Just wait a while and try again. If your download stalls at 99% or less and, after several minutes, never progresses, this may be due to a firewall issue blocking the download of an “exe” file. You will need to open up your firewall to allow downloads from our site.
-
When double clicking on the installer file for ViewletBuilder4, I get an error that this is not a “…valid Win32 file…”?
This error means that the ViewletBuilder4 installer file is corrupted or was not fully downloaded. This is sometimes caused by anti-virus software scanning the exe file during the download or the firewall blocking a full download of the exe file. If you can, try disabling anti-virus software during the download and make sure that your firewall allows download of exe files from our site when downloading the ViewletBuilder4 installer file. If you continue to encounter problems after downloading again, please contact support@qarbon.com.
-
Why do I keep getting a "Cannot connect to network server" error when installing ViewletBuilder4?
If you are using the Quick Install file (viewletbuilder.exe), it will require you to be online during the installation process. If you experience problems when installing with this file, this error will be displayed on your screen. To get around this issue, you can download the stand-alone installer. This is a full installer package for most current release of ViewletBuilder4 and once downloaded, can be used to install the program locally, without an Internet connection.
-
Why do I get an error “…serial number does not match our database…” when trying to register?
You might see this error when trying to register with an older license that is not available for use with the version you are trying to register. Or, perhaps, the license has expired. If this happens, try to register again, making sure you have correctly entered your code. If the error comes up again, please email customer_service@qarbon.com with the error and provide your license code.
-
When using Auto Activation, why do I get the error, “Could not connect to the Activation servers to complete the activation process”?
In order to use Auto Activation to register ViewletBuilder4, you must be online and have access to our servers. If you verify that you are actively connected to the Internet when getting this error, your firewall may be the problem. So, we recommend that you use one of the alternate processes for registering ViewletBuilder4, either Web Activation or Phone (Email) Activation. Gray (white / tan) box appears across all slides while editing text objects.
This may be due to a memory refresh issue. When ViewletBuilder4 tries to redraw a text object shape is does not have enough memory to complete the operation successfully (due to other programs grabbing it like anti-virus or others which need it), the monitor doesn't fully refresh. This results in a gray (white / tan) box appearing on the screen. This “box” is not part of the project; it is just a portion of the monitor that has not been refreshed. When this happens, immediately save your project. Then, close the ViewletBuilder4 program and relaunch the program. This will free up memory and the box should be gone. To avoid this from happening in the future, make sure that your computer meets the technical specifications for using the ViewletBuilder4 program. Also, more RAM will help. If increasing RAM is not an option, try increasing your Virtual Memory settings so that if the program needs to grab more memory, it can do so from here. Also, turn off other programs not needed while using ViewletBuilder4.

Why do I get an error when trying to save (or compile) my project?
If you get an error when trying to save new or newly edited projects, this may be due to a program installation issue when installing an updated version of the program over an existing installation. Uninstall the ViewletBuilder4 program (this step is essential) and then download the current release and do a fresh installation. This should resolve the issue. Other issues that might prevent a project from saving (compiling) include:
-Incompatibility with network (or shared) drives. Save to the local hard drive when possible.
-Long file name. Shorten the file name of a project, when possible.
-Computer attempting to save (or compile) over a file (or in a folder) tagged as “read only”. Check the attributes of your source file (or your compiled files) and folder and make sure that the computer didn’t tag them as “read only”.
-Corrupted slides (or elements on slides). Check your slides to make sure that what you see in Thumbnail View is also contained in Slide View. If not, then this slide is corrupted and will not compile. Also, if you suspect a corrupted slide, but don’t know which one it might be, you can try importing several slides at once into a new project (usually corrupted slides will not be imported). Or, compile and note along the compilation progress bar which slide the compilation is stopping at and remove that slide and the ones in front and after it from the project and see if this resolves the issue.
-
When attempting to open a project, I get an “…invalid project...” error, why?
You will see this happen when trying to open Viewlet source files that are not compatible with the version you are using. Or, this error will appear if the project is corrupted (for whatever reason). If you know that the project is compatible with the version of the program you are using, then try restoring the project from the backup file. To do this, go into the Viewlet’s project folder and locate a file ending in .qv~. Change the extension to .qvp and see if the backup can be opened inside ViewletBuilder4.

-
Why are my desktop icons so big after taking screenshots and how do I fix them?

Why is my Viewlet fuzzy when previewing it in a browser?
If you launch the .swf file directly in a browser (instead of from the _viewlet_swf.html file), the Flash file will scale to fit inside the browsers “playing” area. As it is scaled, the images in the Viewlet may get fuzzy. Or, if you use the “Viewlet Dimensions” option in the “Viewlet Profile” screen to compile at a size different from your original slide size, this will also scale the Viewlet, possibly causing an slight distortion in the image. Keep in mind, if you need to resize your Viewlet for playback, you might consider creating smaller slide sizes to begin with. Or, if you are compiling at the same size as your slide size and NOT launching the .swf directly in a browser while still encountering this issue, then you should check the “Image Quality” setting in the “Viewlet Profile” screen prior to compiling to ensure it is set to the highest quality setting.
-
Why is my audio so soft in my Viewlet project?

Why does my audio sound different inside ViewletBuilder4 (preview mode) than in the compiled Viewlet?
If your audio sounds fine when previewing it back inside ViewletBuilder4, but you encounter audio issues (such as static, lower quality of audio sound, no audio at all, etc.) after compiling, the issue may be the sound quality used for compiling. In the Viewlet Profile screen, select the Sound Quality option. Make sure you are using at least “High Quality” and then recompile and see if this resolves the issue.
-
I’m having trouble playing back audio inside ViewletBuilder4, what should I do?
The first thing to do is compile the Viewlet (make sure that the Sound Quality in the Viewlet Profile screen is set to at least “High Quality”.). Then, play the Viewlet back inside a browser and check the audio quality. If the audio quality is fine, you can continue to use this approach to preview just the compiled Viewlet, when needed instead of doing it from inside the program. The issue for playback inside the ViewletBuilder4 program is usually due to an incompatibility or buffering issue with your sound card. When this happens, you might have to update your sound card drivers, if updates are available, in order to play back audio inside ViewletBuilder4.
-
My compiled Viewlet shows random white slide backgrounds or parts of the slide missing during playback, why?
There was a bug in previous versions of ViewletBuilder4 where some of the slide backgrounds “dropped” out during compilation, resulting in this issue. This is resolved in the latest release of ViewletBuilder4.2.1. Just download and install the current release and recompile your project to resolve this issue.
-
When choosing a different ViewletSkin, it doesn’t show up in the compiled Viewlet, what do I need to do?
If you choose a different ViewletSkin that doesn’t show up after recompiling, go into the Viewlet Profile screen and select the HTML Edition section. Press the “Reset to Standard Code” button and then recompile your Viewlet. This will reset your Viewlet’s code its original coding, reflecting the latest skin chosen and should resolve this issue.
-
After playing back (or closing) my compiled Viewlet, another browser window opens with a “javascript” error, how do I get rid of this?
This is a bug existing in ViewletBuilder4.2.0, which is resolved in ViewletBuilder4.2.1. Uninstall ViewletBuilder4.2.0 and then download the current release and install it. Then, recompile the Viewlet project and this will resolve the issue.
-
My Viewlet stops at the end of my custom intro (animated extra) and never goes into the actual Viewlet, why?
Make sure that your custom Flash file does not have a stop action or flag at the end of it. This is the most common reason this issue occurs.
-
My Viewlet has a custom (animated extra) intro, but on playback, the intro keeps playing and never goes into the Viewlet, what should I do?
You may have a looping option or a stop action added to your custom Flash intro. Removing the looping option or the stop action should resolve this issue.
-
The “preloader” bar completes, but then “sticks” and the Viewlet never plays, why?
This problem is seen only on some earlier versions of ViewletBuilder4. Using the preloader bar in conjunction with ‘fade out effect’ and the ‘wait for slide’ option (instead of ‘wait until all slides are loaded’ option) causes the preloader to stick on playback. There are a few workarounds for this issue. One way is to uncheck fade out effect. Another way is to choose the “wait until all slides are loaded” option instead. Or finally, you may choose to remove the preloader completely. This problem does not occur on ViewletBuilder versions 4.4 or later.

It seems that tooltips and other pull-down menu items shown in the active desktop are not captured in screen shots. How can I capture these items?
You can achieve this in one of two ways:
One way is using Print Screen, you can save the part of the screen needed and then import the picture into the Viewlet-Project as a background. Or,
you can update ViewletBuilder preferences. In order to speed performance, some video drivers use special video memory to display tooltips and popup menus. ViewletBuilder preferences can be modified to make sure it includes this memory when performing screen captures. To update ViewletBuilder preferences, do the following:
1. Exit ViewletBuilder
2. Locate the preferences.xml file:
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\ViewletBuilder4\preferences.xml
3. Look for the section that says ‘ screenshot’. It should look something like this:
<screenshot>
<showSizerHelp>1</showSizerHelp>
<showBalloonHelp>1</showBalloonHelp>
</screenshot>
4. Add the following entry to the screenshot group
<captureBlt>true</captureBlt>
For example:
<screenshot>
<showSizerHelp>1</showSizerHelp>
<showBalloonHelp>1</showBalloonHelp>
<captureBlt>true</captureBlt>
</screenshot>
After setting the captureBlt to “true” , there may be unwanted or corrupted graphics appearing in your screen captures. If you experience this, revert back to the original settings and use method 1 instead.
